Adding Subclass and Ability Feature

Hi.. I’m very new to DMing, and to be honest i very like Realm VTT as beginner DM among other VTT out there.
i have difficulty in understanding about rules section for adding Subclass and its ability that involve increase ability or extra feats ability.
is there any simpler guide where i can follow. thks

Hi there, welcome and thanks for joining us!

Are you trying to create or add a Subclass? If so which one? Happy to show you how do it with some screenshots.

Here are some pointers that may help with an example of how I did a Cleric Subclass!

  • On the features tab of the subclass, enter all the features and at what level you get them

  • If you later get a better version of it (such as a Rogue’s Sneak Attack) you can sometimes add one version that uses a formula for the bonus, or if it’s easier, you can add it multiple times. If you level up later and get a feature of the same name, it replaces the old one.

  • On the right I show the Blessing of the Trickster which has an ability (click the icon of the new feature to open this window)

  • First create the Ability

  • You can create Abilities under the Compendium → Abilities menu

  • Click the portrait in Edit mode of the ability and you can click “Choose a Portrait” and “From Realm VTT Icons” to choose one of our internal icons

  • On the Rules tab, you set the damage the ability can do, healing, or effects it can add

  • This one is a simple effect, so I created an Effect

  • Then in the Rules tab of the Ability you can click down on the Effects dropdown and start typing the name of the new Effect you made, click it when it appears to set it

  • Finally back in the Feature above – you can click into the Grants Ability checkbox, start typing the name, and the new ability will appear – click it to select it.

  • Ability Group Name is the name of the group it’ll add to when the feature is granted (such as “Cleric Abilities” in this case.) For groups that have your own usage counters like “Channel Divinity” you want to use the same group name if it belongs there.

  • This example doesn’t apply here, but for Channel Divinity you can check how I implemented that for Cleric in the SRD to see how it gets the number of daily uses, etc.

Finally - if you’re adding modifiers (like if some features grant resistances, etc.) scroll down in the Rules tab of the Feature and add a modifier. Modifiers can be very complex so let me know if you have a question on how to do one.

You can also go to this document which outlines what 5e’s ruleset can do in modifiers: D&D 5th Edition (2024) Ruleset User Guide | Realm VTT

Hope this helps!

Hi thank you so much for the reply.

Yea, i want to add missing subclass form PHB,
So here are what i did last night, hope you can correct me.

i try to add Barbarian subclass Path of Zealot.

this is the feature.

adding Ability

The ability Rules

for example is there anything i miss out to enter from here?

No problem!

That is certainly one way you can do it.

I actually entered it this way using modifiers:

In the modifiers I set the ‘active’ checkbox as off. What this does, and the reason I did it this way is because, then it gives them the option to add the damage on each roll:

Then they can toggle radiant or necrotic (since you pick one and only on the first creature you hit with a weapon or an Unarmed Strike while raging.)

Hope that helps!

Edit to add: Another reason this is easier is because then it’ll auto-double that damage if you use the Critical damage button!

I see, but then if i add modifier should i add ability as well or i can do either way?

If you add modifiers you do not have to add abilities - but you can do both if you want to!

You could do it as an Ability or as a Modifier.

You can also do it specifically as a “Toggle” - that’s a bit more advanced - but you can check out the Rogue class as an example - I updated it recently to add a Toggle for Sneak Attack. Toggles show up at the top of the Attacks list.

Edit: The system was made to be very flexible so we can account for any edge case
